This CEO Says Biz Leaders Cant Afford to Ignore Social Issues
This CEO Says Biz Leaders Cant Afford to Ignore Social Issues The world today is quickly changing, with power imbalances being publicly eradicated or at least exposed and the roles of those in power shifting, as well. For leaders of corporations, whats the best way to ensure the continued longevity of a brand amidst all this transformation? Becoming an agent of change yourself.Thats the message behind a recent letter from Larry Fink, CEO of global investment firm BlackRock. Addressed to CEOs of public companies, the letter contains a call to action for more corporate leaders to put on the mantle of activism and accept a new role that of a changemaker in both business and society.Society is increasingly turning to the private sector and asking that companies respond to broader societal challenges, he explained. Indeed, the public expectations of your company have never been greater. Society is demanding that companies, both public and private, serve a social purpose.Fink argued that in order for a company to prosper in todays world, it must elend only deliver financial performance, but also show how it makes a positive contribution to society. The community in which a business operates, he added, is just as important a stakeholder as the customers themselves.Companies must ask themselves What role do we play in the community? How are we managing our impact on the environment? Are we working to create a diverse workforce? he wrote.Fink isnt the only CEO to perceive his role as a leader in the context of a greater social picture (though some would argue that hearing these sentiments from a $6 trillion asset manager is, more or less, a first). Increasingly, consumers are voicing a desire to align with brands that serve a social mission, and no longer does making money exist in a separate sphere from doing good. Instead, the challenge now lies in finding new and innovative ways to intersect the two. And its a challenge CEOs should be taking on for ethical as well as fiscal reasons, Fink said.Stakeholders are demanding that companies exercise leadership on a broader range of issues, and they are right to, he wrote. A companys ability to manage environmental, social, and governance matters demonstrates the leadership and good governance that is so essential to sustainable growth, which is why we are increasingly integrating these issues into our investment process.Where BlackRock is concerned, Fink practices what he preaches by placing an emphasis on diverse hiring, especially.Boards with a diverse mix of genders, ethnicities, career experiences, and ways of thinking have, as a result, a more diverse and aware mindset, he wrote. They are less likely to succumb to groupthink or miss new threats to a companys business model. The time has come, Fink contended, for CEOs to demonstrate a new brand of influence as he put it, a style of leadership and clarity that will drive not only their own investment returns, but also the prosperity and security o f their fellow citizens.

Military Family Appreciation Month
Military Family Appreciation MonthMilitary Family Appreciation MonthMilitary Family Appreciation Month Strategies for Meeting Military Families Toughest ChallengesBy Kathryn TroutmanPublished November 16, 2017Jan Meert has looked at the role of military spouse and mom from both sides now. Jan is married to an Army Soldier, and they have two boys, 12 and 14. Jan has had a federal civilian career working on bases in the U.S., Asia and Europe, managing on-post organizations like Army Community Service (ACS) that benefit servicemen and women and their spouses.Jan and her husband, having most recently served 9 years on bases in Germany, relocated in 2017 to Virginia. She sat down with us recently on the occasion of Military Family Appreciation Month to share her unique perspective on the challenges that military families face and to mention often overlooked resources that can help spouses improve their lot in military life especially by finding meaningful, well-paying work.First I want to share with you some statistics on the perennial plight of our military spouses. Did you know that more than half of American military families have relocated at least three times, according to a report from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation? While most military families believe they need two incomes, more than 40 percent of spouses say that companies dont want to hire them because the family may have to move. Disturbingly, 80 percent of responding spouses said that their job search process has created stress between them and their active duty spouse.++++++++FREE ONE-HOUR WEBINARS for Military Spouses and Federal Job Search Strategies with EO 13473To register click here.++++++++In Jans experience, the key challenges for military spouses areUnemployment, underemployment and limited career opportunitiesFinding reliable child care and helping your children adjust to their new home/locationBuilding a local support network, only to receive permanent change of station (PCS) orders shortly thereafterNot knowing what to expect with an overseas assignment, and feelings of isolation once having arrived in a foreign countryBeing stationed overseas can create culture shock, says Jan. A lot of people get nervous because for example driving is on the other side of the road in England or Japan so maybe they are hesitant to go off post. There are also challenges associated with language barriers, lack of family or friends nearby, changes in financial status (maybe the spouse had to give up her job when the family relocated thereby decreasing the family income)all of ansicht things can cause a lot of stress for military families.Take advantage of the military spouse preferenceFor military spouses, federal employment often with the Department of Defense typically holds the best promise of plentiful opportunities with career potential and good pay and benefits. For military families, the secret weapon for career and financial success is to register with Program S, t he military spouse preference program for civil service jobs. Enrollment makes spouses eligible for noncompetitive appointment to civil service positions when the family is relocated via PCS order. What does that mean? These qualifying spouses jump to the head of the line of applicants for federal civilian job vacancies. The military spouse preference for federal vacancies is especially powerful when youre overseas, says Jan. For a given Program S-eligible position, there are likely to be fewer applicants, maybe only 10, and only five qualified. Its also a great benefit for those stateside spouses because there are definitely more opportunities available.Theres also broader help available for spouses seeking jobs on a military installation. You can go visit the Family Services Center and get help with resumes, as well as getting on a weekly or monthly email list of local area job postings, says Jan. Some centers will even do MBTI tests, conduct mock interviews, and point out volunte er opportunities that might lead to employment.Seek out and use all relevant resources on-post and onlineWhether you need help with school adjustment or with finding a job, many resources are available to you though not all are easy to discover. Its critical to learn to fish to discover the services, resources, opportunities and anything that could help with your life or that of your family, Jan says. She particularly recommends connecting with the local Family Service Center as well as your services branch of Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation. Both agencies are a plethora of information on a variety of topics, all of which are helpful to military families. To develop a broad network, be active in many circlesBeyond asking for information and assistance through official channels on your installation, its critical to make as many informal connections as you can, and to let them know about the kind of job youre looking for.It could be any group from a spouses club to a running club because you might hear about someone leaving an organization and creating a vacancy, says Jan. Get involved in schools, service organizations, and social media, and stay active in those groups. If you let people know who you are, the skills and strengths you can bring to the table, opportunities will come up, Jan says.++++++++FREE ONE-HOUR WEBINARS for Military Spouses and Federal Job Search Strategies with EO 13473To register click here.++++++++Take advantage of the military spouse preferenceFree 60 Min Webinar about Federal Jobs for Military Spouses and the EO 13473To registerclick here.Visit us atwww.resume-place.comfor more great tips and info for military spouses and federal resume writing. The Stars are Lined Up for Military Spouses for USAJOBs and PPP-S by Kathryn TroutmanLearn how to write a correct federal resume.Available as a Kindle book from Amazon for $6.95

3 ways to make planning a vacation a little easier for you
3 ways to make planning a vacation a little easier for you3 ways to make planning a vacation a little easier for youYou can follow a pre-vacation checklist one line at a time - including setting up the perfect out-of-office email reply - and still feel frazzled when youre planning a trip. Here are three ways to take the edge off during the process.Stay ready do some packing before you actually have toThis could both save time and help you avoid forgetting something on your way out.The Washington Post features information from and about Alice Boyes, PhD, the author of The Anxiety Toolkit and a former psychologist. Heres some insight on how she stays ready for travel.Rather than repacking toiletries every time, Boyes keeps duplicates of items she uses frequently, such as her toothbrush and toothpaste. She places one in a suitcase and keeps one at home. She also keeps clothing in her suitcase that she knows she will wear on the road. This allows her to put less time and energy into pre paring the night before when shes usually still working late, the publication reports. Before leaving tell your colleagues when you will and wont be freeElizabeth Grace Saunders, an author, founder of Real Life E Time Coaching Speaking and time management coach, explains this in the Harvard Business Review.Once youve figured out what you will do before leaving on vacation and what can be handled while youre away, clarify what you will not do until you return. I recommend having a sense of this in your mind early. But wait until three or four days before you leave to make the final call on whats in or out. By then you should be sure about what you can reasonably accomplish, and you can relay this information to your boss, teammates, and anyone else involved in the work, she writes. It can be uncomfortable to have these conversations, but its almost always best to be up front about what to expect instead of leaving people hanging who are expecting something from you, and then having to absprache with a mid-vacation crisis caused by lack of communication. Update colleagues on the status of projects and let them know that nothing will move forward until after you get back in the office. Also, give key individuals the heads-up that you wont be available - or as available - during the time that youre away, Saunders continues. On the trip dont get flustered too easilyDont forget to cut yourself some slack.Social psychologist Susan Newman told the Readers Digest that when things go off-track on your trip, you should think of it as an adventure, because often the mishaps and the things that go wrong actually become either humorous in your memory bank or the best thing that happened on the whole vacation.
